Lazio in talks for Hernanes - July-28-10

Lazio have flown to Brazil with a view to signing Sao Paulo’s highly-rated midfield general Hernanes.

The 25-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best players in South America.

He was named Brazilian Footballer of the Year in 2008 and even topped a list of the world’s most promising youngsters compiled by The Times in January 2009.

Il Corriere dello Sport understands that Lazio director of sport Igli Tare has a meeting scheduled with Sao Paulo’s directors to discuss Hernanes’ transfer.

Sao Paulo reportedly value him at €15m, but Lazio have started the bidding a little lower at €12m with room to negotiate.

Lazio face significant competition for Hernanes from no fewer than 10 teams, including French side Lyon.

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini yesterday ruled his side out of the running for his signature.

Sao Paulo are currently involved in the Copa Libertadores, which ends in the middle of August, so Hernanes probably won’t be able to join Lazio until the end of the transfer window.

However, Lazio defender Andre Dias, who played with Hernanes at Sao Paulo for fours years until moving to Italy in January, says his former team-mate is keen on Italy.

“I spoke to him three or four weeks ago. He asked me about Lazio and I told him that they are a good club, who are competitive and fight for third or fourth place in Serie A, for the Champions League or the Europa League.

“I added that all the Brazilians who live in Rome are waiting for him. His dream is to play for a big European club.

“Hernanes is a versatile player. He is in a position to play with both feet. He plays as an attacking midfielder and he is very strong.

“He is not like Kaka. They are different players. Both are great talents, but they have different characteristics. It’s difficult to compare them. Hernanes defends better than Kaka.”
